Climate

We’re campaigning for net zero in Merton, as well as a green and fair recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, to help ensure a sustainable future for all.

Earth’s on fire

The climate emergency is one of the most pressing challenges facing humankind today. From extreme weather events to food scarcity, from rising sea levels to biodiversity loss, we risk irreparable damage to the planet we call home if we don’t take action now.

Yet those in power are failing to make changes commensurate with the scale or urgency of the problem. And in Merton we need to reduce emissions by at least 12% every year to do our fair share.

What we’re doing

  • Supporting local climate action

We contributed to the development of Merton’s Climate Strategy & Action Plan and continue to work with other community groups and the Council (while also holding it to account) to support a fair transition to net zero.

  • Campaigning against fossil fuels

We’ve campaigned against the expansion of Heathrow airport and the increased emissions a third runway would cause. Most recently we’ve petitioned Merton Council to divest from fossil fuel investments in its Pension Fund.

  • Lobbying politicians

We’ve met with our local MPs and London Assembly Member, asking them to commit to key climate measures such as Climate Action Plans and a green and fair recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
