By volunteering with Merton Friends of the Earth, you can help make a difference not only in our local community but also at a national and international level.

We know life can get busy and really appreciate any time you can offer, from signing a petition to leading a campaign. And as we’re a group of volunteers, no prior experience is necessary: caring about people and planet is the only pre-requisite!

All volunteers are also able to access a wide range of training, from media skills to campaigning strategies and more! Current volunteers are even taking part in AI training with Friends of the Earth International. Warm Homes Campaign Coordinator (1-2 hours per week)

Do you have an interest in politics and campaigning? Would you like to help ensure green policies are on the agenda for upcoming general election? Then our campaign coordinator role might just be for you!

We are looking for a volunteer to help amplify our Warm Homes Campaign, bringing this issue to the attention of local MPs and highlighting its importance in Merton in this election year.

Duties will include:

  • Developing an action plan (with support of Merton FOE coordinators and Friends of the Earth central teams) to amplify the Warm Homes Campaign.

  • Working with the Elections Coordinator and Community Events Coordinator to plan and run events to share the campaign with the local community and encourage MPs and other decision makers to attend.

  • Working with the Social Media and Website Managers to amplify the campaign online.

  • Leading our petition with signatures from the local community to be delivered to MPs ahead of the election to ask them to make the issue a part of their campaigns.

  • This role will be supported by skills training and support from Friends of the Earth UK’s central teams.

Elections Coordinator (1-2 hours per week)

This year is fundamental in our fight to protect our planet. Are you interested in promoting green policies to candidates in the upcoming general election? Do you want to make sure whoever represents our community in Parliament is committed to protecting the environment? If this sounds interesting to you and you would like to gain vital experience in political campaigning this role might be perfect for you!

Our Elections Coordinator will work with our Campaign Coordinator and Website and Social Media Managers, to lead our Elections Initiatives for the 2024 Election.

Duties will include:

  • Developing an action plan (with support of Merton FOE coordinators and Friends of the Earth central teams) to engage MPs in our work and asking them to prioritise green policies in their election campaigns.

  • Liaising with the MPs & Councillors Coordinator to share our work and objectives with MPs and encouraging them to commit to environmental goals for the area in their campaigns.

  • Leading the gathering of signatures for our green policies petition (including working with our Website and Social Media Managers to share this online) and delivering this to MPs ahead of the election.

  • This role will be supported by skills training and support from Friends of the Earth UK’s central teams.

MPs & Councillors Coordinator (1-2 hours per week)

If you are passionate about the environment and keen to gain more experience with local and national politics (or to use the experience you already have for a good cause!) then we would love to hear from you! We are looking for an MPs & Councillors Coordinator to work in close collaboration with our Election and Campaigns Coordinators and Social Media and Website Managers to engage with MPs and local councillors to keep them involved them in our work and committed to protecting the environment.

Duties will include:

  • Acting as the main point of contact for MPs and Councillors and ensuring they have the correct information about our work and our campaigns, working with our Group Coordinators to develop messaging.

  • Arranging meetings with MPs and Councillors and ensuring they are invited to any appropriate events, including Natasha Irons is invited to our tree planting events.

  • Greeting MPs and Councillors at events and following up on networking opportunities from events and meetings.

  • Debriefing with MPs and Councillors about the Warm Homes Petition that the Warm Homes Campaign Coordinator will deliver in the run up to the election.

  • This role will be supported by skills training and support from Friends of the Earth UK’s central teams.

Air Quality Campaign Coordinator (1-2 hours per week)

Are you passionate about ensuring the air in your local area is safe to breathe and would like the chance to help improve air quality across Merton? If so we would love to hear from you! We are looking for some to lead our Air Quality Campaign and work with other members to amplify our work in this area.

Duties will include:

  • Working with our Group Coordinators to develop the future strategy for the campaign and its goals.

  • Liaising with Website and Content, CRM, and Social Media Managers to create content and comms messaging for campaign and ensuring the campaign is shared appropriately with our network and the wider community.

  • Leading a petition with signatures from the local community to be delivered to MPs ahead of the election and asking them to make the issue a part of their campaigns.

  • Working with our Community Events Coordinator to plan and run an event to share the campaign with the community, liaising with the MPs and Councillors Coordinator to ensure attendance from key people.

  • Feeding back to the group at monthly meetings on the progress of the campign.

  • This role will be supported by skills training and support from Friends of the Earth UK’s central teams.

Social Media Manager (1-2 hours per week)

Would you like to use your passion for social media to support our work protecting our environment? Would you like the chance to lead the growth of our channels and have an important impact on tackling the climate emergency? If so we would love to hear from you!

We are looking for a Social Media Manager who can offer a few hours a week to help us amplify our work, working closely with our Website and Content Manager and Campaign Coordinators.

Duties will include:

  • Planning, designing, and posting engaging and creative social media content according to calendar and activities.

  • Engaging with other groups and campaigns on social media channels that align with our work; sharing relevant posts and cultivating relationships with potential community partners.

  • Working with our Website Manager and CRM Manager to develop future media strategies and discuss what content is needed.

  • This role offers opportunities for further training from Friends of the Earth UK.

CRM Manager (1-2 hours per week)

Do you have a passion for communicating and connecting with others? Would you like to help us share our work and increase our impact in the community? If you would love the opportunity to develop your CRM and community engagement skills while supporting our mission to protect our planet then we would love to hear from you!

Duties will include:

  • Writing and distribution of our monthly newsletter to our current members and volunteers.

  • Seeking out opportunities to grow our database within our community and finding new ways to engage people in the area to promote our work.

  • Liaising with the Social Media Manager and Website and Content Manager about content and asset needs and working with them to develop strategies for increasing engagement.

  • This role offers opportunities for further training from Friends of the Earth UK.

Meetings Coordinator (1-2 hours per week)

Would you like to use your organisational and creative problem solving skills to support our mission to protect our local environment? Then we would love to hear from you! We are looking for a Meetings Coordinator to help us organise and run our monthly meetings and ensure they are accessible to all our members and volunteers.

Duties will include:

  • Arranging monthly meeting including booking space and ensuring any access needs are taken into account.

  • Liaising with Group Coordinators to prepare and make available the agenda for each monthly meeting.

  • Takes notes at each meeting and prepares and distributes minutes afterwards.

  • Ensuring action points from previous meeting are taken/revised at each meeting.

  • Working with Website and Social Media Managers to advertise each meeting effectively.

Fundraising/Grants Coordinator (1-2 hours per week)

Would you like to use your research, drafting, and communication skills to help us further our goal of protecting our local environment? Then you might be exactly the person we want to hear from! We are looking for someone to help us identify and apply for new sources of funding so that we can grow our work and do even more to protect our environment.

Duties will include:

  • Identifying fundraising and grants opportunities and feeding these back to our Group Coordinators.

  • Drafting applications for grants and funding and monitoring the progress of these.

  • Working with Group Coordinators to develop future fundraising initiatives.

  • This role offers opportunities for further training from Friends of the Earth UK.

Partnership & Community Engagement Coordinator (1-2 hours per week)

Are you a great communicator with a passion for connecting with other people? Would you like to use these talents to help us grow our connections with other groups in our community? We are looking for a Partnership & Community Engagement Coordinator to help us expand our network across the community and beyond. We would love to hear from you if this sounds like you!

Duties will include:

  • Acting as the main liaison contact for our current community partnerships and continuing to develop these relationships through shared work and support, for example with Sustainable Merton, one of our key partners.

  • Identifying new opportunities for connecting with local groups as well as new initiatives where we might work together with our current partners and feeds these back to our Group Coordinators.

  • Liaising with CRM Manager to identify areas for potential growth.

  • Working with our Website and Content and Social Media Managers to identify how we can effectively share our content and engage with community partners online.

  • Potential for attending occasional community engagement events if able to do so, such as the Green Coffee event.

  • This role offers opportunities for further training from Friends of the Earth UK.

Welcome Manager (1-2 hours per week)

Do you enjoy meeting new volunteers and helping people to feel welcome and supported? Would you like to develop your volunteer coordination skills? If so then we would love to hear from you! We are looking for a Welcome Manager to help us make new volunteers feel at home with us!

Duties will include:

  • Leading the welcoming of new volunteers with a Welcome Call and acts as point of contact for any questions or concerns they may have.

  • Helping any volunteers who are unsure what role they would like to take on and finds them something they will love!

  • Working with Group Coordinators and other managers to organise a quarterly Welcome Event for new volunteers to come and meet each other and the rest of the group.

  • Working with other managers to identify opportunities to attract new volunteers and suggesting ways to make potential volunteers feel safe and welcomed at our outreach events.

  • This role offers opportunities for further training from Friends of the Earth UK.

Community Events Coordinator (1-2 hours per week)

Do you have a passion for organising and running events? Would you like to grow your skills while supporting us to grow our impact in our local community? If you would like to help us with our community events, amplifying our work and helping us to grow our networks then we would love to hear from you!

Duties will include:

  • Supporting our Group Coordinators to plan and run a range of community events.

  • Liaising with other Partnership & Community Engagement and CRM Managers to identify new opportunities to attract new members, newsletter readers and community partners at through local events.

  • Working with other members to develop plans for each event and ensure we have everything we will need at events.

  • Working with other members and Group Coordinators to create a plan for future events, deciding which events we would like to attend and how we might make the most of events.

  • Liaising with and feeding back to the wider group about event opportunities and our plans for future events.

  • This role offers opportunities for further training from Friends of the Earth UK.
