Glyphosate information request

On 30 November 2021 we submitted a request for environmental information to Merton Council under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 Act in relation to its use of glyphosate-based weed killers. Although such herbicides are currently legal, there is strong evidence to suggest these chemicals have harmful long-term impacts, both on the natural world and on human health.

We requested information regarding the types and amounts of glyphosate-based weed killers used by Merton Council and/or its contractors, the Council’s decision-making processes for such usage and its compliance with Plant Protection Products Regulations 2012.

We hope that, like local authorities in other areas such as Lambeth, Bristol and Lewes, it will commit to phasing out the use of glyphosate-based herbicides altogether.

We received a response from the council on 13 January 2022. They confirmed that glyphosate-based herbicides are used by their service providers for weed control on streets, greenspaces and parks, as well as for control of Japanese Knotweed.
